The Kingston NV3 is the drive most people should be fitting when they upgrade a machine that still runs on a hard disk or an older SATA SSD. It uses a Gen 4×4 NVMe controller to reach sequential read speeds of up to 5000MB/s and write speeds of up to 3000MB/s, which in practice means a system that boots in seconds and applications that open before you have finished clicking.

At 500GB it gives enough room for an operating system, a full office software suite and a working set of documents and projects, with headroom left over. The single sided M.2 2280 design fits the standard slot found in most business laptops, desktops and small form factor machines built in the last several years.

Power draw and heat output are both low, which matters more than it sounds. In a thin laptop, a drive that runs cool holds its speed under sustained load instead of throttling, and it does not eat into battery life.

Kingston rates the drive at 160TB written over its life and 2 million hours mean time between failures, backed by a five year limited warranty with free technical support. That is a sensible specification for a business machine that needs to stay in service for a full refresh cycle.
